my triumphant success at the top of my lungs and the universe screamed encouragement around me. Desperate for help I ran towards them as fast as I could, the one person I found turning quickly into a group, a realization that filled me with hope for my own future. I felt a presence from behind me and knew without looking that some of the others from the room I had woken up in had joined me, a single perusal of freedom suddenly a much larger effort.

Falling into the arms of a woman wearing a rescue vest, the bright red cross on her back calling my attention first, I held her tightly and cried out with my need before my teeth sunk into the soft flesh of her neck and I feasted, skin stretching as I bit into it and pulled away, revealing the delicate tendons and muscles that were already covered in her metallic flavored blood. The sweat of her skin and the occasional tear added a salty twang that was so delicious my eyes rolled back into my head as I devoured her. It wasn’t long before her screams subsided though my hunger was far from sated and I dropped her to the ground as her heart stopped beating. Frustration filled me at having not yet been satisfied and I moved towards another meal. Harder to latch onto, this one was proving to be more difficult and I had to dig my nails into his shoulder to drag him down to the ground.

As I bent to eat I heard a rhythmic thumping and looked up to see a large man running towards me, a movement caught my attention and I screamed in confusion as the flat side of a shovel swung towards my face.

I heard a crack, a snap and then finally… felt no pain.
